The Story
Arizona is a contemporary Armenian-American drama that follows three longtime friends in their twenties on an eight-hour road trip from Los Angeles to Prescott Valley, Arizona, to visit their friend Sarin, who married and moved there about a year earlier. At the last minute, Sarin asks them to bring along her father, Sahag, a recently retired school principal recovering from a mental health crisis, to stay with her while he rebuilds his life.
What begins as a simple road trip gradually becomes something far more complicated. Confined together for eight hours, the four travelers talk, argue, joke, remember, and reveal more than they intended. Old friendships are tested, generational differences surface, and questions of identity, family, love, mental health, and belonging begin to emerge.
By the time they reach Arizona, it becomes increasingly unclear who is helping whom.
Serious without being solemn, Arizona is a contemporary Armenian play about people trying to understand one another and themselves, told with the humor, irreverence, and humanity that run through Vahé Berberian’s work.
